Kathmandu — Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal has stated that recent attacks and criticism directed toward the private sector are inappropriate and harmful to the nation’s economic environment. Speaking at the 16th Annual General Meeting of the Nepal Forum of Economic Journalists (NAFIJ), he emphasized that the private sector remains an essential pillar of Nepal’s economic development.
“The structures and assets created by the private sector ultimately belong to the Nepali people,” he said. “These institutions will eventually transition over time, but attacking the private sector is not right. Everyone must work toward protecting and strengthening it.”
Correct the Process, Not the People
Minister Khanal mentioned that policies and procedures can be corrected if flawed, but taking the wrong steps against the right individuals could discourage investment and innovation.
“If someone has committed a crime, the government is ready to take necessary action,” he said. “But such matters should not be dealt with through random comments on the streets, social media, or the press.”
GenZ Movement Not Only About Prosperity
He clarified that the recent GenZ movement is not solely about economic prosperity. According to him, the movement emerged due to rampant corruption, its promotion by influential individuals, and the need for transparent public service delivery.
“These demands have been raised persistently, and they require sincere response,” he added.
Election Must Take Place on Time
Minister Khanal stressed that elections are indispensable for political and economic stability. “Postponing elections would push the country toward uncertainty,” he warned. “It affects numerous activities and sectors. Elections must take place on time under a positive environment.”
He further stated that the government is committed to holding elections in a safe, fearless, and impartial manner, with the consensus of all political parties and support from citizens. Maintaining Nepal’s democratic image in the international community is essential, he said.
Nepal Should Not Lose Its Positive Global Evaluation
Minister Khanal remarked that the international community has continued to evaluate Nepal positively, and the country should preserve and enhance that image. He noted that the government needs to undertake further reforms in the coming days to strengthen its credibility and improve public perception.
