A large amount of gold stolen from the New Baneshwor branch of Nepal Rastra Bank has been publicly revealed. Customers who had pledged gold for loans at the bank are now seen in distress. Some customers have expressed concern, saying the gold they deposited was a family heirloom. The question of how the gold will be compensated remains uncertain.
The bank has mentioned that it will reimburse the value of the gold based on the market price on the day of the theft, but there is still no clarity on the compensation for the workmanship and design of the jewelry. One victim mentioned, "The gold was my wife's wedding jewelry, and all of it was stolen," and stated that the weight of their gold was reduced, with only 6.5 tolas remaining.
The incident involved the theft of 18 kg of gold and 50 million rupees. This theft occurred as a result of the intrusion of Gen Z protests. There were eight lockers at the bank for holding collateral, one of which was broken into and the gold was stolen. This event has created widespread dissatisfaction and concern among the bank's customers and the public.
