In the fiscal year 2081/82, the number of individuals and institutions blacklisted by the Credit Information Bureau (CIC) reached 53,571. This marks an increase of 2.42% (1,268 cases) compared to the previous fiscal year, when 52,303 were blacklisted.
According to CIC spokesperson Bijay Kunwar, although the number of blacklisted cases had been rising rapidly in previous years, the growth rate in the last fiscal year remained relatively low. Over the past five years, however, the figure has surged by 722.39%. In FY 2077/78, the blacklist contained only 6,514 cases, which rose to 15,995 in 2078/79, 34,081 in 2079/80, 52,303 in 2080/81, and 53,571 in 2081/82.
Kunwar explained that not only borrowers but also guarantors can be placed on the blacklist. For institutional borrowers, shareholders holding more than 15% ownership, directors, and valuators can also be listed. However, for statistical purposes, each borrower is counted only once.
