The number of taxpayers obtaining an individual Permanent Account Number (PAN) has reached nearly 4.9 million. According to the Inland Revenue Department, a total of 4,892,840 individual PANs were registered by the end of fiscal year 2081/82.
The surge in registrations comes after the government made PAN mandatory for payments in recent years. During this period alone, 2,012,908 new taxpayers obtained individual PANs.
Similarly, the number of taxpayers registered under Value Added Tax (VAT) has reached 345,727, while those registered under Excise Duty stand at 119,402. Additionally, 35,853 taxpayers have registered as Withholder PAN holders.
This year, the department suspended the registration of 96,487 VAT-registered taxpayers who failed to comply with tax laws. As per the VAT Act 2052, taxpayers who do not submit tax returns for six consecutive months are publicly listed, and their details have already been disclosed.
