Kathmandu, May 29 – The Government of Nepal has announced a total budget of NPR 1.964 trillion for the fiscal year 2082/83, marking an increase of NPR 104.11 billion compared to the previous year’s budget of NPR 1.86 trillion.
Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel presented the budget during a joint session of the Federal Parliament, highlighting priorities in social security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, health, job creation, and information technology.
Comparative Budget Breakdown:
Category | FY 2081/82 Budget | FY 2082/83 Budget | Difference | Growth Rate |
---|---|---|---|---|
Recurrent Expenditure | NPR 1.140 trillion | NPR 1.180 trillion | NPR 40.98 billion | ~3.6% increase |
Capital Expenditure | NPR 352.40 billion | NPR 407.89 billion | NPR 55.49 billion | ~15.7% increase |
Financial Management | NPR 367 billion | NPR 375.24 billion | NPR 8.24 billion | ~2.2% increase |
Highlights:
Capital expenditure has increased by 15.7%, reflecting the government’s push toward infrastructure development and public investment.
Recurrent expenditure still constitutes 60.1% of the total budget, pointing to challenges in institutional cost control and spending efficiency.
Financial management allocations have seen a slight increase, ensuring continuity in debt servicing and financial liabilities.
This year’s budget clearly aims to boost development and stimulate economic growth, with a strong focus on capital investment. However, the large share of recurrent spending and the need to improve execution capacity remain significant hurdles for the government.
The budget sets a foundation for inclusive growth, job creation, and strengthened service delivery across key sectors.
