The table highlights the export figures of major commodities, providing a detailed look at annual and nine-month data for fiscal years 2021/22, 2022/23, and provisional data for 2023/24.
Key Insights:
Total Export Performance:
In the fiscal year 2021/22, Nepal's total exports to China stood at Rs. 808.8 million.
This figure saw a significant rise to Rs. 1765.8 million in 2022/23, demonstrating substantial growth.
Provisional data for 2023/24 further reflects this trend, with total exports reaching Rs. 2114.5 million, a modest 2.2% increase from the previous year and an impressive 232% increase compared to the nine-month period of 2022/23.
Commodity-wise Breakdown:
Agarbatti: The export of agarbatti (incense sticks) witnessed remarkable growth, climbing from Rs. 3.7 million in 2021/22 to Rs. 8 million in 2022/23. The nine-month data for 2023/24 shows an even more dramatic increase to Rs. 15.7 million, representing a 264.1% rise.
Handicrafts (Metal and Wooden): This category saw a significant decline, with a 49.5% decrease in 2023/24 compared to 2022/23.
Noodles: A standout performer, the export of noodles surged to Rs. 514.2 million in 2022/23 from a modest Rs. 8.4 million in 2021/22. However, there were no exports recorded in the nine months of 2023/24, highlighting volatility.
Other Handicraft Goods: This sector experienced a consistent decline, with a 40.6% drop in 2023/24 compared to the previous year.
Pashmina: The export of pashmina showed resilience and growth, rising by 173.3% in the nine months of 2023/24 compared to the previous period.
Readymade Garments: This sector exhibited mixed performance. While there was a substantial 324% increase in 2022/23, it slightly decreased by 4.7% in the nine months of 2023/24.

Other Commodities:
The category labeled "Others" has shown substantial growth, from Rs. 229.6 million in 2021/22 to Rs. 682 million in 2022/23, with a notable rise to Rs. 1157.2 million in the nine months of 2023/24, marking a 359% increase.
Interpretation:
The data indicates a dynamic and somewhat volatile export market. Some commodities, such as noodles and agarbatti, have experienced exponential growth, while others, like handicrafts, have faced significant challenges. The overall export performance to China reflects a positive trend, with a marked increase in total exports over the analyzed periods.
This growth can be attributed to several factors, including improved trade relations, better market access, and targeted efforts to boost specific exports. However, the fluctuations in certain categories highlight the need for Nepal to diversify its export portfolio and stabilize supply chains to ensure consistent growth.
In conclusion, while Nepal's export performance to China shows promising growth, there are areas requiring strategic intervention to sustain and enhance this upward trajectory. The government's focus on promoting key sectors and addressing challenges faced by declining categories will be crucial in ensuring balanced and robust export growth in the coming years.
