Family Reunion Visa Thailand — Step-by-Step for Nepali Applicants

Family Reunion Visa Thailand — Step-by-Step for Nepali Applicants

The Thailand Family Reunion Visa, officially known as the Non-Immigrant “O” Visa (Family Category), allows Nepali citizens to reunite with their loved ones living or working in Thailand. This visa is primarily designed for the spouse, children, or parents of Thai citizens or foreign residents holding valid long-term visas such as Non-Immigrant “B” (Business) or Non-Immigrant “O-A” (Retirement). It gives Nepali dependents the right to enter Thailand for the purpose of family reunion, long-term companionship, or caregiving.

To apply for this visa, the applicant must first confirm the relationship with the sponsor who is residing in Thailand. The sponsor can be either a Thai national or a foreigner working legally in Thailand. Applicants are required to provide authentic and verified relationship documents such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or family relationship certificate, depending on their relation with the sponsor. These documents must be translated into English and authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Nepal before submission.

The visa application process begins by preparing all necessary documents. The applicant needs a valid passport with at least six months of validity, two recent passport-size photographs, and a duly filled visa application form. Additionally, the sponsor’s passport, Thai ID card, work permit, or visa copy must be included. Proof of accommodation such as hotel reservation or a letter from the family confirming residence in Thailand is mandatory. Financial documents like a six-month bank statement showing a minimum balance equivalent to THB 500,000 (around NPR 2.3 million) are required to ensure that the applicant can support themselves during their stay.

The visa fee is THB 2,000 for a single-entry visa and THB 5,000 for a multiple-entry visa, payable through a Manager’s Cheque made out to “The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu” via Global IME Bank. The embassy does not accept cash or online payments. Applications can be submitted from Monday to Friday, between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM.

Processing generally takes 3 to 7 working days, depending on verification of documents. Once approved, the visa allows an initial stay of 90 days in Thailand. Upon arrival, applicants can apply for an Extension of Stay at the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok or a nearby provincial immigration office. If the sponsor’s visa remains valid, the stay can be extended for up to one year. During this period, visa holders must report their residential address to the immigration office every 90 days.

It’s important to note that holders of a Family Reunion Visa are not permitted to work in Thailand unless they obtain a separate work permit. Overstaying a visa can lead to fines of THB 500 per day, up to THB 20,000, so applicants should renew or extend their visa before expiry. For those wishing to travel outside Thailand during the visa period, a Re-Entry Permit must be obtained (THB 1,000 for single entry and THB 3,800 for multiple entries).
