How to Identify Market Trends and Phases in NEPSE

In the world of Technical Analysis, recognizing market trends and phases is one of the most critical skills every trader must master. The ability to understand where the market is and where it might be heading helps traders make informed and confident decisions. In the context of the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), where price movements are heavily influenced by sentiment, liquidity, and institutional activity, understanding trends and phases allows traders to align their strategies with the market’s natural rhythm — instead of fighting against it.

A market trend refers to the general direction in which prices are moving — up, down, or sideways. An uptrend is characterized by higher highs and higher lows, showing that buyers are in control. A downtrend displays lower highs and lower lows, meaning sellers dominate. A sideways or ranging market occurs when prices move within a horizontal channel, reflecting indecision or balance between buyers and sellers. Identifying these structures early is key to trading with the flow, not against it.

However, beyond just trends, markets also move in phases or cycles. A full market cycle generally includes four distinct stages:
1️⃣ Accumulation Phase – After a long decline, smart money and institutional investors quietly start buying while retail traders remain fearful. Prices move slowly within a range, and volume starts increasing gradually.
2️⃣ Markup Phase – This is when the uptrend begins. Prices start breaking resistance, confidence returns, and retail traders start joining the rally. This phase often provides the biggest profits for disciplined traders.
3️⃣ Distribution Phase – At this stage, prices reach their peak. Smart money begins selling gradually while the general public is still buying enthusiastically. Volume spikes, volatility increases, and reversal signals appear.
4️⃣ Markdown Phase – The market finally turns downward. Prices break major support levels, panic selling begins, and retail traders suffer losses while smart money waits for the next accumulation opportunity.

In NEPSE, these market phases are visible across sectors — such as hydropower, banking, and insurance — where liquidity cycles and investor psychology repeat over time. By analyzing trendlines, swing highs/lows, moving averages, and volume patterns, traders can identify which phase the market or a particular stock is in. Combining this with Price Action and Smart Money Concepts (SMC) allows one to spot institutional footprints and anticipate major shifts before the crowd reacts.
