Japan Family Visit Visa Processing Time & Embassy Fee for Nepali Applicants

When applying for a Japan Family Visit Visa from Nepal, it’s essential to understand the processing timeline and official embassy fees before submission. The Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu and VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centre (Chhaya Center, Thamel) jointly handle visa processing for Nepali applicants. Both institutions strictly follow Japan’s immigration protocols, ensuring that applications are verified, documented, and reviewed thoroughly before issuance.

According to official embassy guidelines, the average processing time for a Japan Family Visit Visa is 5 to 7 working days from the date of submission at VFS. However, this duration can vary depending on document completeness, verification requirements, and embassy workload. In straightforward cases — where all supporting documents are valid and translations are accurate — the visa may be issued within 5 working days. But if additional verification is needed (for example, unclear relationship proof, financial inconsistency, or pending COE review), the process may extend to 15–30 days or even longer, as the embassy might forward the case to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo for further examination.

Applicants are advised to apply at least 3 to 4 weeks before their intended travel date to avoid last-minute stress. The Embassy of Japan in Nepal handles visa issuance decisions, while VFS Global is responsible for collecting applications, biometric data, and forwarding files to the embassy. Once the visa decision is made, VFS contacts applicants for passport collection.

As of April 2025, the official Japan visa fees in Nepal are as follows:

  • Single Entry Visa: NPR 2,680

  • Multiple Entry Visa: NPR 5,360

  • VFS Service Charge: NPR 2,083 (non-refundable)

The visa fee is only refundable if your visa is not processed or rejected before evaluation; however, the VFS service charge is non-refundable under all circumstances. Payments can be made in cash at VFS counters, and receipts must be kept for record purposes.
