Japan Medical Visa Fees, Insurance & Doctor Certificate Requirements

Applying for a Japan Medical Stay Visa allows Nepali citizens to travel to Japan for medical treatment, health checkups, surgeries, or recovery programs. This visa is designed for patients and their accompanying attendants who plan to visit Japanese hospitals officially registered under Japan’s Ministry of Health.
The visa fee for a Japan Medical Stay Visa is generally the same as a tourist visa—around ¥3,000 (approximately NPR 2,700) for a single entry and ¥6,000 (around NPR 5,400) for a multiple entry visa. However, additional service charges (usually NPR 1,000–2,000) may apply if you apply through VFS Japan Visa Application Center in Kathmandu. The fee must be paid in Nepalese Rupees at the time of submission and is non-refundable even if the visa is refused.
Medical insurance is highly recommended for all applicants. Although it may not always be mandatory, the Japanese Embassy strongly advises travelers to show proof of international medical insurance that covers hospitalization, emergencies, and evacuation. Having valid insurance demonstrates financial preparedness and enhances the chances of approval since it shows the applicant can handle unexpected medical costs during treatment in Japan.
Applicants must submit several doctor-related certificates and medical documents from the hospital in Japan. These include:
A Medical Treatment Certificate or Letter from a Japanese hospital describing the illness, proposed treatment, and expected duration.
A Medical Invitation Letter from the Japanese medical institution, confirming the hospital’s readiness to treat the patient.
Proof of Financial Means such as bank statements, tax documents, or a sponsor’s letter to show that all treatment and travel expenses can be covered.
If the stay exceeds 90 days, a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the Japanese Immigration Bureau is mandatory, which the hospital or guarantor in Japan helps to obtain.
In addition, the applicant should include a Doctor’s Certificate from a Nepali medical professional confirming the need for treatment abroad, along with translations (if required). Embassy officers may also request diagnostic reports or proof of previous medical consultations.
Before applying, make sure to collect all original documents, signed and stamped by the issuing hospitals, and to prepare an English or Japanese translation for all Nepali medical reports. Processing time is typically 10–14 working days, depending on the complexity of the case and embassy workload.
