Long-Term Investment Strategy Using Fundamental Analysis in Nepal

A long-term investment strategy based on fundamental analysis is one of the most reliable and time-tested approaches for wealth creation in the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE). Unlike short-term trading, which focuses on market fluctuations and technical indicators, long-term investing emphasizes the true value of a company, its financial strength, and its ability to generate consistent returns over time. The objective is simple — to invest in fundamentally strong companies and let compounding work in your favor.
Fundamental analysis helps investors determine whether a stock is undervalued or overvalued by examining its financial statements, management quality, competitive advantage, and future growth prospects. This includes evaluating metrics such as Earnings Per Share (EPS), Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio, Book Value, Dividend Yield, Debt-to-Equity Ratio, and Return on Equity (ROE). A long-term investor looks for companies with steady earnings growth, low debt, high profitability, and transparent governance — signs of a business that can survive economic cycles and continue rewarding shareholders.
In Nepal’s context, sectors such as commercial banking, hydropower, insurance, and manufacturing often offer long-term potential when chosen carefully. For instance, banks with high Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and low Non-Performing Loans (NPL) tend to generate sustainable returns, while hydropower companies with long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) provide predictable cash flows. The key is to invest in companies that have strong fundamentals, not just hype or short-term market popularity.
A long-term investment approach also involves patience, discipline, and regular portfolio review. Markets may move up and down in the short term, but fundamentally strong companies grow in value as profits compound over the years. Reinvesting dividends and holding quality stocks through market corrections can yield exponential results.
According to Sandeep Kumar Chaudhary, Nepal’s leading Technical and Fundamental Analyst and founder of the NepseTrading Training Institute, “Long-term investing is about vision, not reaction. The market rewards patience and discipline more than emotion.” With 15+ years of banking and stock market experience and having trained over 10,000 investors, he emphasizes that long-term investors who rely on fundamental principles rather than market noise can achieve true financial independence through NEPSE.
