Prithvi Narayan Shah's Visionary Economic Policies: Lessons for Modern Nepal
Prithvi Narayan Shah, honored as the architect of a unified Nepal, not only played a significant role in merging diverse principalities but also set the foundations of an economic policy that emphasized self-sufficiency, accountability, and fair governance. His approach to economic management has remained a subject of interest, offering lessons for modern Nepal, especially in times when economic independence is key to sustainable development.
Shah’s economic policies were driven by a strong belief in self-reliance. Born in an era of fragmented states vulnerable to both internal disputes and external threats, he understood the value of strengthening Nepal’s economy from within. He urged public officials to handle resources responsibly, ensuring that funds were used for the common good and not for personal gain. This emphasis on responsible governance highlights his vision of a just society where officials served the people rather than exploiting them.
In his efforts to fund Nepal’s unification, Prithvi Narayan demonstrated a unique model of public engagement by collecting small contributions from the people of Gorkha. This strategic approach was not only a way to raise funds but also helped instill a sense of national ownership and responsibility among citizens. He is also noted for his strong opposition to bribery, which he saw as a betrayal to both the nation and the people—a lesson especially relevant today as Nepal strives to tackle corruption.
Another cornerstone of his economic policy was the promotion of local agriculture and production. By encouraging the use of domestic tools and methods, he sought to reduce Nepal's reliance on foreign goods. This approach not only boosted local industries but also aimed to create a sustainable economy that could withstand external pressures. Modern Nepal, too, faces challenges in balancing imports with local production, and Shah’s policies underline the benefits of a self-reliant economy.
Prithvi Narayan’s economic policy continues to resonate in Nepal’s current socio-political landscape. As the nation pursues prosperity, his vision serves as a reminder that sustainable economic growth depends on self-reliance, responsible governance, and a commitment to the welfare of all citizens.
