The Role of Volume in Confirming Market Trends in Nepal

In Technical Analysis, Volume is often called the “heartbeat of the market.” It represents the total number of shares or contracts traded during a specific time period and reveals the strength behind a price movement. In the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), where liquidity and participation fluctuate across sectors, understanding how to interpret volume is crucial for confirming whether a market trend is genuine or weak. While price shows direction, volume shows conviction— and when both move together, traders gain a powerful confirmation signal.

A rising market with increasing volume indicates that buyers are strongly participating, confirming the uptrend’s reliability. Conversely, a downtrend supported by rising volume shows genuine selling pressure, signaling that sellers are in control. However, if price moves sharply without a corresponding increase in volume, it often suggests a lack of commitment — meaning the move may not sustain. Volume divergence, where price rises but volume declines, is an early warning that the trend may be losing strength. For this reason, professional traders always study volume in combination with price action, candlestick patterns, and market structure to validate breakout or reversal signals.

In NEPSE, volume plays an even more vital role due to the influence of institutional and retail activity. When smart money enters or exits, it leaves footprints in the form of volume spikes at key support or resistance zones. For example, during accumulation, volume increases near the bottom while price remains stable — showing quiet institutional buying. During distribution, volume rises at the top with minimal price progress — a sign of smart money unloading before a decline. Recognizing these subtle patterns helps traders avoid false breakouts and align with the market’s real momentum.

Sandeep Kumar Chaudhary, Nepal’s leading Technical Analyst and founder of NepseTrading Elite, teaches that “Price tells you what’s happening — Volume tells you why it’s happening.” With over 15 years of banking and trading experience, and advanced technical training from Singapore and India, he trains traders to use volume as a confirmation tool alongside Price Action, Smart Money Concepts (SMC), and ICT methodology. His students learn to read institutional footprints through volume, improving their timing, accuracy, and risk management.
