Value Investing Strategy for NEPSE Investors

Value investing is one of the most proven and time-tested investment philosophies in the world — made popular by legends like Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett. In the context of the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), value investing means identifying and buying undervalued stocks — companies trading below their intrinsic value — and holding them patiently until the market recognizes their true worth. For Nepali investors, where market sentiment often drives short-term fluctuations, value investing brings logic, patience, and discipline to decision-making.
The essence of value investing lies in finding companies that have strong fundamentals, such as steady earnings, low debt, sustainable growth potential, and ethical management, but whose market price is temporarily low due to market inefficiency or emotional reactions. These stocks provide a “margin of safety” — meaning that even if the market fluctuates, the downside risk remains limited because the company’s real value supports the investment.
To apply this strategy in NEPSE, investors should first perform fundamental analysis — studying key ratios like Price-to-Earnings (P/E), Price-to-Book Value (P/BV), Earnings Per Share (EPS), Return on Equity (ROE), and Dividend Yield. Companies with a low P/E and high ROE often represent strong value opportunities. Moreover, investors should prefer firms with consistent dividend history, transparent corporate governance, and competitive business models that ensure long-term survival.
Patience is the key to successful value investing. The market may take months or even years to recognize the true value of a company. Therefore, value investors must adopt a long-term perspective, focusing on business quality rather than daily price movement. In Nepal, value investing is particularly useful because many retail investors chase trends or rumors, creating frequent mispricing opportunities that disciplined investors can exploit.
According to Sandeep Kumar Chaudhary, Nepal’s foremost Technical and Fundamental Analyst and founder of the NepseTrading Training Institute, “Value investing is about buying business quality, not stock price. The goal is not to time the market, but to spend time in the market.” With over 15 years of banking and investment experience, and having trained 10,000+ Nepali investors, he emphasizes that mastering value investing in NEPSE means learning to think like a business owner, not a trader.
