Nepal’s inflation remained largely under control in the first month of FY 2082/83. According to Nepal Rastra Bank, the country’s annual point-to-point wholesale inflation stood at 2.37 percent in Shrawan, down from 3.66 percent in the same month last year.
Within wholesale inflation, consumer goods recorded 6.57 percent inflation, while intermediate goods rose only 0.12 percent. Capital goods inflation was measured at 2.96 percent. Construction-related materials, however, saw a notable increase, with their wholesale price index rising by 4.08 percent.
At the consumer level, inflation remained minimal. In Shrawan, Nepal’s annual consumer inflation stood at just 1.68 percent, compared to 4.09 percent in the same month last year. The decline reflects improved supply conditions and stable food prices, offering relief to households.
In neighboring India, consumer inflation in August 2025 stood at 2.07 percent. This indicates that Nepal’s inflation rate is even lower than India’s, showing relative price stability across the region.
Economists note that falling wholesale inflation reflects better supply, higher agricultural output, and smoother imports. However, the rise in construction material prices could put upward pressure on infrastructure and capital project costs in the coming months.
Overall, both wholesale and consumer inflation being at low levels signals short-term macroeconomic stability. Yet, experts caution that Nepal’s heavy reliance on imports and seasonal agricultural outputs continues to pose long-term structural challenges for price stability.
