Bangkok Medical Visa Application Process for Nepali Citizens

Bangkok Medical Visa Application Process for Nepali Citizens

For Nepali citizens seeking high-quality and affordable medical treatment abroad, Thailand — especially Bangkok — has become one of the top destinations for advanced healthcare. The country’s excellent hospitals, world-class doctors, and modern medical technology have made it a regional hub for medical tourism. To travel for treatment, Nepali patients must apply for the Thailand Medical Treatment Visa, often classified under the Tourist (MT) Visa or Non-Immigrant “O” Medical Visa. This visa allows Nepali patients to enter Thailand legally for medical treatment, surgery, or specialized consultation, and to stay for the required duration as approved by the Thai embassy and hospital.

The process begins with selecting the appropriate hospital in Thailand — such as Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej, or Vejthani Hospital, all of which have international patient departments serving Nepali clients. The patient must first contact the hospital directly or through an official partner like Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., which facilitates hospital tie-ups and obtains a treatment confirmation or appointment letter. This letter is a mandatory requirement for the medical visa and must clearly mention the patient’s name, passport number, diagnosis, treatment details, expected duration of stay, and the hospital’s official signature and stamp.

Once the treatment appointment is confirmed, the applicant should prepare all supporting documents. These include a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), completed visa application form, two passport-size photos (3.5 × 4.5 cm), the hospital appointment letter, medical reports from Nepal, bank statement of the last six months, and proof of accommodation in Thailand (hotel booking or hospital stay). In addition, proof of financial capability — such as a solvency certificate or tax documents — is important to show that the applicant can cover medical and living expenses. Applicants must also show a confirmed flight booking and travel insurance if available. If the patient is accompanied by a relative, a relationship certificate such as a marriage or birth certificate is required for the attendant’s visa.

Applicants can submit their documents at the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu or through the official e-Visa portal (www.thaievisa.go.th). The visa fee is generally THB 2,000 for a single entry or THB 5,000 for multiple entries, payable via Manager’s Cheque issued from Global IME Bank in favor of “The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu.” The embassy strictly does not accept cash or online transfers. Once the documents are submitted, the processing time is around 7–10 working days, though additional verification from the hospital or embassy may extend this period to two weeks.

After the visa is approved, the patient can travel to Thailand within the validity period and begin treatment. On arrival at the airport, immigration authorities stamp the entry date, which usually allows 60 to 90 days of stay, depending on the visa type. If the treatment requires more time, the hospital can issue a medical extension request letter, allowing the patient to apply for a visa extension directly at the Thai Immigration Bureau. The extension is typically granted for medical reasons and may last until the completion of the patient’s treatment.

Hospitals in Bangkok provide comprehensive support to international patients, including airport transfers, interpreters, visa extension coordination, and recovery accommodations. Institutions like Samitivej and Bumrungrad have dedicated South Asia desks that handle document assistance and direct embassy communication for Nepali patients. These hospital tie-ups, combined with the guidance of Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., make the medical visa process easy, transparent, and reliable.
