Cardamom Exports Nearly Double (+99.5%): Spice Trade Boosts Foreign Earnings

Nepal’s spice sector experienced a remarkable surge in FY 2025/26 as cardamom exports nearly doubled, rising by 99.5 percent. Monthly export earnings climbed to Rs. 321.7 million, compared to Rs. 161.2 million in the same period of the previous year. This sharp growth lifted cardamom’s share to 1.3 percent of total exports, reaffirming its position as one of Nepal’s most valuable agricultural exports.

The surge was driven by strong demand in India and Middle Eastern markets, where Nepali large cardamom is prized for its unique flavor and high quality. Unlike several declining traditional exports—such as woolen carpets (-26.6%), tea (-30.9%), and particle boards (-56.6%)—cardamom stood out as a bright spot in Nepal’s agricultural trade.

This growth also highlights the potential of Nepal’s high-value spice trade in boosting foreign earnings. However, volatility in global spice prices, competition from Bhutan and India, and the need for better branding, processing, and certification remain key challenges. If Nepal can address these issues, cardamom could continue to strengthen its role in diversifying the export basket.
