China Family Visit Visa Fees, Validity & Extension Procedure

For Nepali citizens visiting their family members, relatives, or spouses in China, understanding the visa fees, validity, and extension process of the China Family Visit Visa (Q1/Q2 or S1/S2) is very important. This visa is officially issued by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Kathmandu through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) located at Rising Mall, Kamaladi. It allows Nepali nationals to stay in China either for short family visits or long-term reunions.
The visa fee depends on the type of visa and number of entries requested. As of 2025, the updated visa fees are as follows: for Single Entry, applicants need to pay around NPR 12,000 to 14,000; for Double Entry, NPR 16,000 to 18,000; and for Multiple Entry valid for six months to one year, NPR 20,000 to 25,000. If an applicant wants faster processing, the express service (within 2–3 working days) costs an additional NPR 3,000 to 5,000. Payment must be made in cash in Nepali rupees at the CVASC counter during submission, and applicants should keep the payment receipt for passport collection.
The validity and duration of stay depend on the visa type. The Q1 and S1 Visas are issued for long-term family reunions (over 180 days). Holders of these visas must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit at the Public Security Bureau (PSB) within 30 days of arrival in China. Once approved, the residence permit can be valid from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the inviter’s visa or residence status. On the other hand, the Q2 and S2 Visas are meant for short-term family visits of less than 180 days, usually allowing stays of 30 to 90 days per entry. These are typically single or double-entry visas and cannot be used for permanent residence.
If a visitor wants to extend the duration of stay, they can apply for a visa extension or residence permit renewal at the Exit and Entry Administration Office of the Public Security Bureau (PSB) in the city of residence. The extension application must be submitted at least 7 days before the visa expiry date. Required documents include a valid passport, current visa, invitation letter, proof of relationship, temporary residence registration form from the local police station, and recent passport-size photos. Short-term visas (Q2/S2) can usually be extended for another 30–180 days, while long-term permits (Q1/S1) can be extended for up to one year depending on eligibility. Overstaying a visa can lead to fines, blacklisting, or future visa restrictions.
