China S1/S2 Visa for Visiting Family Members or Friends from Nepal

The China S1/S2 Visa is specially designed for Nepali citizens who want to visit their family members or friends living in China who are foreign nationals with legal residence status, such as work (Z visa), student (X visa), or permanent resident holders. These visas fall under the Private Affairs Visa category and are processed through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) at Rising Mall, Kamaladi, Kathmandu, under the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nepal.

The S1 Visa is issued for long-term family stays exceeding 180 days, mainly for immediate family members such as spouses, parents, children, or parents-in-law of foreigners working or studying in China. On arrival, the S1 visa holder must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit at the Public Security Bureau (PSB) within 30 days to stay legally in China. The S2 Visa, on the other hand, is for short-term family visits or private affairs lasting less than 180 days, suitable for relatives or friends visiting foreign nationals temporarily residing in China.

To apply for the S1 or S2 Visa, the applicant must obtain an invitation letter from the foreign family member or friend living in China. This letter must include the inviter’s name, address, contact information, relationship with the applicant, and the purpose and duration of the visit. The inviter must attach a copy of their passport, Chinese residence permit, and proof of relationship such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or family registration document. Other required documents include a valid Nepali passport with at least six months’ validity, a recent photo (48mm × 33mm, white background), a bank statement showing financial stability, and flight and hotel bookings.

Applicants must complete the online visa form through visaforchina.cn, print and sign it, and then book an appointment with CVASC Kathmandu for document submission. The visa fee varies depending on the entry type — approximately NPR 12,000 to NPR 18,000, and the processing time is generally 4 to 7 working days. For urgent travel, express processing (2–3 working days) is also available for an additional fee. Once approved, the visa will specify the duration of stay and entry type (single or double entry).

As a result, more than NPR 838 billion (8.38 trillion rupees) has accumulated at Nepal Rastra Bank in various forms, including deposit collection instruments, standing deposit facilities, and central bank bonds.
