China Scholarship Visa Process for Nepali Students

China Scholarship Visa Process for Nepali Students

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) — also known as the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) — is one of the most prestigious and fully funded scholarship programs offered by the Government of China. It provides international students, including Nepalis, an opportunity to pursue undergraduate, master’s, and PhD studies in top Chinese universities. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, monthly stipend, and medical insurance, making it one of the most comprehensive educational funding opportunities for Nepali students aspiring to study abroad.

To apply for the CSC scholarship, Nepali students must first ensure they meet the eligibility criteria. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, and within the age limits — below 25 for bachelor’s, 35 for master’s, and 40 for doctoral programs. They must hold the required prior qualifications and submit language proficiency certificates such as HSK for Chinese-taught programs or IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programs.

There are two main categories: Type A (Bilateral Program) — applied through the Chinese Embassy in Nepal or the Ministry of Education, and Type B (University Program) — directly through Chinese universities authorized by the CSC. Students can choose up to three universities while filling out the CSC Online Application Form on the official website (https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn), usually open between December and April each year.

Applicants must upload essential documents, including a passport copy, academic transcripts, notarized diplomas, study plan or research proposal, recommendation letters, medical certificate, and a non-criminal record certificate. After online submission, universities or the Chinese Embassy evaluate the applications and forward the recommended candidates to the CSC headquarters in Beijing for final selection.

Once approved, selected students receive an Admission Notice and JW201 form, which are essential for applying for a China Student Visa (X1 visa) at the Chinese Visa Application Center (CVASC) in Kathmandu. The visa application requires a valid passport, admission documents, completed visa form, photograph, medical report, and proof of scholarship. After arrival in China, students must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days at the local Public Security Bureau, allowing them to stay legally during their study period.
