Do Nepali Citizens Need a Visa for Hong Kong or Macao?

For Nepali citizens planning to travel to Hong Kong or Macao, it’s important to understand that these two regions have separate immigration and entry policies, even though both fall under China’s “One Country, Two Systems” framework. As of 2025, Nepali passport holders are not eligible for visa-free entry into either Hong Kong or Macao. This means a visa or entry permit must be obtained prior to travel, depending on the purpose of visit — tourism, business, family visit, or transit.
Hong Kong Visa Requirement
Nepali citizens must apply for a Visit Visa or Entry Permit before traveling to Hong Kong. The visa process is handled by the Hong Kong Immigration Department and can be submitted either through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu or via the Chinese Visa Application Centre (CVASC). Applicants must provide the following:
A valid passport with at least six months’ validity.
A completed visa application form (ID 1003A & ID 1003B).
A recent passport-size photograph.
Flight booking confirmation, hotel reservation, and proof of financial stability.
For business or family visits, an invitation letter and identification documents of the inviter are required.
Processing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, as applications are sent to Hong Kong for approval. Applicants are therefore advised to apply well in advance of their planned travel date.
Macao Visa Requirement
Macao also requires Nepali citizens to obtain a visa or entry permit prior to arrival. Unlike some countries eligible for visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry, Nepal is not listed among exempt nationalities. The visa must be applied for through the Embassy of China in Kathmandu or, in some cases, through an authorized travel agency.
To visit Macao, travelers must present:
A valid passport (with at least 90 days validity beyond intended stay).
Hotel and flight bookings.
Proof of sufficient funds.
Purpose of travel documentation, such as business invitation or tourism details.
It’s important to note that immigration authorities in both Hong Kong and Macao maintain strict verification processes, and incomplete documentation may result in delays or rejection. Nepali travelers should also ensure their documents are consistent and genuine.
Key Difference Between Hong Kong and Macao Policies
While both regions require Nepali citizens to obtain a visa, Hong Kong’s visa processing is handled directly by the Hong Kong Immigration Department, while Macao’s is administered by the Public Security Police Force of the Macao SAR. The two systems are independent; holding a Hong Kong visa does not permit entry into Macao, and vice versa.
For travelers transiting through these regions or combining both destinations in a single trip, it is essential to secure separate visas for each. Consulting an experienced visa advisor like Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd. ensures your application is complete, accurate, and in compliance with the latest regulations.
