Hong Kong Marriage Registration for Foreign Nationals — Process & Fee

Hong Kong Marriage Registration for Foreign Nationals — Process & Fee

Foreign nationals, including Nepali citizens, who wish to get legally married in Hong Kong can do so under the Marriage Ordinance (Cap. 181), which permits both residents and non-residents to register their marriage in the Hong Kong Marriage Registry. The process is internationally recognized, making Hong Kong a popular destination for foreign couples seeking an English-language civil marriage that is valid abroad.

The process begins with giving a “Notice of Intended Marriage” to the Registrar of Marriages at least 15 days before the ceremony. Either or both parties can submit the notice in person at a Marriage Registry or online through the official Hong Kong Government Marriage Registration System. The notice remains valid for three months, during which the marriage must be performed.

Applicants need to present the following documents:

  • Valid passports or travel documents of both parties

  • Proof of marital status (e.g., “Single Certificate” or “Certificate of No Impediment” issued by your home country)

  • Birth certificates or official ID proof

  • Completed Notice of Intended Marriage form

  • Visa or entry permit showing legal stay in Hong Kong

Once the notice is accepted, a Certificate of Registrar of Marriages is issued after 15 days, allowing the marriage to proceed. The couple can then schedule their marriage ceremony at one of Hong Kong’s 10 Marriage Registries (such as Cotton Tree Drive, City Hall, or Sha Tin) or at an approved licensed venue.

Fees:

  • Giving Notice of Marriage: HKD 305 (approx. NPR 5,200)

  • Civil Ceremony at Marriage Registry: HKD 715 (approx. NPR 12,000)

  • Licensed Place of Worship or Venue: HKD 2,000–3,500 (depending on the venue and officiant)

All payments must be made in Hong Kong Dollars, either online or at the registry counter. Foreign couples should ensure all documents not in English or Chinese are translated and notarized before submission.

For Nepali nationals, Hong Kong’s marriage certificate is legally valid in Nepal and globally recognized, making it a preferred destination for international legal marriages. However, after marriage, couples are advised to register their Hong Kong marriage certificate at the Consular Section of the Nepal Embassy in Beijing or through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu for local record-keeping.
