Japan Long-Term Medical Stay Visa for Nepalis — Renewal Process

For Nepali citizens staying in Japan for medical treatment, the Long-Term Medical Stay Visa is designed to allow extended residence for ongoing care, rehabilitation, or chronic treatment under a Japanese hospital. When the permitted period of stay under this visa is nearing expiration, applicants must apply for a renewal or extension of period of stayto continue their treatment legally without interruption.

The renewal process is managed by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, and it should be initiated at least 30 days before your visa expiry date. The key condition for renewal is that your medical treatment is still ongoing and medically justified. The Japanese medical institution providing your care must certify that continued treatment is necessary, specifying the treatment plan, expected duration, and your current progress.

To renew your visa, visit your nearest Regional Immigration Bureau in Japan and fill out the Application for Extension of Period of Stay form. Along with this form, you must submit:

  • Your passport and residence card.

  • A new medical certificate from the treating hospital explaining the need for extended stay.

  • An updated medical treatment plan indicating how long you’ll need continued care.

  • A guarantor’s letter or statement of financial support from your hospital, coordinator, or sponsor.

  • Proof of financial capacity, such as recent bank statements or sponsor documents, to show that you can cover medical and living expenses during the extended stay.

  • Any updated medical reports, hospital bills, or receipts that support your ongoing treatment.

The Immigration Bureau will review your documents carefully. If the treatment duration and financial capacity are justified, they will grant an extension of your period of stay, typically ranging from 3 months to 1 year, depending on the treatment schedule. The decision is discretionary, meaning the authorities can approve, limit, or reject the extension based on the authenticity of the documents and medical necessity.

If your medical treatment continues even after the renewed period, you can apply for another extension following the same procedure. However, overstaying or applying after your visa expiry date can lead to serious consequences, including fines, visa denial, or deportation.
