Japan Medical Treatment Visa for Nepali Patients — Complete 2025 Guide

The Japan Medical Treatment Visa (Medical Stay Visa / 医療滞在ビザ) is a special category designed for foreign patients, including Nepali citizens, who wish to travel to Japan for medical checkups, surgery, rehabilitation, advanced treatment, or long-term healthcare. Japan is recognized globally for its high-quality healthcare, advanced medical technology, and specialized hospitals that attract international patients from across Asia. Many Nepali patients travel to Japan to receive treatments such as cancer therapy, heart surgery, orthopedics, and diagnostic examinations that may not be available or affordable locally.
This visa allows both patients and their accompanying family members or caretakers to enter Japan for treatment. For short stays up to 90 days, applicants can apply directly through the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu or VFS Japan Visa Application Centre (Chhaya Center, Thamel). For longer stays exceeding 90 days, the Japanese hospital or sponsor must first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from Japan’s Immigration Bureau.
To apply, the patient must submit a valid passport, visa application form, passport-size photo (45×35 mm), and medical recommendation letter from a Nepali doctor explaining why treatment in Japan is necessary. The Japanese hospital must issue an invitation letter, treatment plan, and medical cost estimate stating treatment duration, diagnosis, and expenses. Additionally, a guarantee letter from the hospital or Japanese sponsor is mandatory, assuring that the patient will abide by immigration laws and bear all expenses.
Applicants must also provide financial evidence, including the latest 6-month bank statement, income certificate, and property proof to demonstrate sufficient funds for medical, accommodation, and travel costs. If a sponsor is paying, their financial documents are required. For long-term treatment, the hospital’s issued COE is essential. If a caretaker or family member accompanies the patient, they must also submit a separate visa application, along with proof of relationship (e.g., marriage or birth certificate).
The visa fee for Nepali citizens as of 2025 is NPR 2,680 for a single entry visa, and NPR 5,360 for a multiple entry visa, with an additional VFS service fee of NPR 2,083 (non-refundable). Processing time typically takes 5 to 7 working days, but if COE verification or special review is required, it can extend up to 3 to 4 weeks.
All medical expenses must be borne by the applicant or their sponsor, as foreigners under the Medical Visa cannot access Japan’s public health insurance. Therefore, it is advised to prepare a sufficient budget for hospital bills, accommodation (approximately USD 100–150 per day), translation services, and travel insurance.
