Japan Multiple Entry Tourist Visa Explained — Who Qualifies?

Japan Multiple Entry Tourist Visa Explained — Who Qualifies?

The Japan Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is a special type of short-term visa that allows travelers to enter Japan multiple times within its validity period, without needing to reapply for each visit. Unlike the regular single-entry visa—where you can only enter Japan once—this visa provides greater flexibility, especially for travelers who frequently visit Japan for tourism, business meetings, or cultural activities. The visa is typically valid for one to five years, and holders can stay up to 90 days per visit.

To qualify for a multiple entry tourist visa, the applicant must demonstrate a strong travel history, financial stability, and a credible purpose of repeated visits. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) issues multiple entry visas primarily to frequent travelers, businesspersons, professionals with cultural or academic involvement, and individuals with close economic or familial ties to Japan. In some cases, individuals who have visited Japan or other developed countries multiple times with a clean immigration record may also be considered.

For Nepali citizens, the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu, through the VFS Global Japan Visa Centre, reviews all applications. The applicant must submit all standard documents — a valid passport (with at least 6 months validity), recent passport-size photo (45mm x 45mm), visa application form, flight booking, hotel booking, and a clear financial statement (last 3–6 months) showing sufficient funds to cover multiple trips. Along with this, the applicant should attach supporting documents that justify the need for multiple entries, such as frequent travel plans, business connections, or proof of family in Japan.

The visa fee for a multiple entry tourist visa is higher than a single entry one. As of 2025, in Nepal, it costs NPR 5,360, whereas a single entry visa costs NPR 2,680. The processing time generally remains the same — around 6 working days, though approval depends on Embassy discretion. Applicants who have held a previous Japan visa (or other major country visas like the U.S., U.K., Schengen, or Australia) have a better chance of approval.

The multiple-entry visa is ideal for those who plan to visit Japan frequently for sightseeing, family visits, or short business trips. However, the Embassy strictly monitors misuse — if a traveler stays beyond the permitted duration or engages in unapproved activities (such as work), future multiple-entry privileges may be revoked.
