Japan Spouse Visa for Nepali Husband or Wife — Complete 2025 Guide

Japan Spouse Visa for Nepali Husband or Wife — Complete 2025 Guide

A Japan Spouse Visa (also known as the Dependent or Spouse Status of Residence) allows a Nepali husband or wifeto legally stay in Japan with their partner who is either a Japanese citizen, permanent resident, or a foreign nationalworking or studying in Japan. This visa is designed to promote family reunification, letting couples live together in Japan for an extended period.

For Nepali citizens, the process begins with the sponsor in Japan applying for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)through the local immigration bureau. The COE confirms that the applicant meets Japan’s visa criteria. The sponsor must provide documents like a Residence Certificate (Juminhyo), Tax Payment Certificate (Shotoku Shomeisho), Employment Certificate (Zaishoku Shomeisho), and proof of income or bank balance. The marriage certificate, if issued in Nepal, must be legalized and translated into English or Japanese before submission.

Once the COE is approved, it is sent to Nepal. The applicant then applies at the Embassy of Japan or VFS Japan Visa Centre (Chhaya Center, Thamel, Kathmandu) with the COE, passport, photo, marriage certificate, and all required documents. The embassy typically takes 5 to 10 working days for processing. After approval, the applicant receives a Spouse Visa sticker on their passport, which allows entry to Japan.

Upon arrival in Japan, the applicant will receive a Residence Card (Zairyu Card) at the airport. Within 14 days, they must register their address at the local municipal office. The Spouse Visa usually has a validity of 1, 3, or 5 years, and it can be renewed as long as the marriage remains legally valid and the sponsor continues to fulfill financial obligations. Holders of this visa can also apply for “Permission to Engage in Activities Other Than Those Permitted” to work part-time up to 28 hours per week.

The key to successful application lies in proving the genuineness of marriage and the financial stability of the sponsor. The Japanese Embassy closely checks whether the relationship is real (through marriage photos, chat logs, remittance proof, etc.) and whether the couple can afford living expenses in Japan without public aid. Any false or incomplete documents can lead to rejection or delays.
