Macao Entry & Exit Rules: What Nepali Visitors Must Know

For Nepali citizens, traveling to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) requires careful compliance with entry and exit regulations, as the region enforces strict immigration rules for nationals of countries not eligible for visa-on-arrival. Nepali passport holders must obtain a pre-approved visa before their journey, regardless of whether they are visiting Macao for tourism, business, family reunion, study, or transit. All applications are processed through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in Kathmandu, and entry permission is subject to final approval by the Public Security Police Force of Macao upon arrival.

Before entering Macao, every Nepali traveller must hold a valid passport (with at least six months of remaining validity), a Macao visa, and a confirmed round-trip air ticket. The visa must match the intended travel purpose, as misuse — such as entering on a tourist visa and engaging in work — is strictly prohibited and may result in entry refusal, deportation, or future visa bans. The approved visa, once granted, defines both the period of validity and the duration of stay per entry. Typically, Nepali travellers are permitted to remain in Macao for a maximum of 14 days per entry, even if the visa itself is valid for a longer period (for example, 3 or 6 months).

There are three common visa validity categories applicable to Nepali citizens:

  • Single-entry visa: valid for 3 months, with a stay of up to 14 days per entry.

  • Double-entry visa: valid for 3 months, permitting two separate visits of 14 days each.

  • Multiple-entry visa: valid for 6 months, with each stay limited to 14 days.

Upon arrival at Macao International Airport or the land border, travellers must go through immigration inspection, where officers verify visa details, travel documents, and financial proof. Applicants are required to demonstrate sufficient funds (at least MOP 15,000) and proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings or host utility bills. Immigration officers retain the authority to grant or shorten the permitted stay based on the purpose of visit and the credibility of the documents presented. If inconsistencies or suspicious details are detected, travellers may face questioning, secondary inspection, or denial of entry.

During their stay, Nepali visitors must strictly adhere to the visa conditions. Engaging in employment, overstaying beyond the approved duration, or violating local laws can result in fines, detention, or immediate deportation. Overstaying, even by a single day, is treated as a violation of immigration law and can affect future visa eligibility. Extensions of stay are generally not granted for short-term visas unless under exceptional humanitarian or medical circumstances and must be applied for through the Public Security Police Force of Macao before the expiry of the existing visa.

When exiting Macao, travellers must depart before the final day of authorized stay. Border officers will verify exit stamps and ensure no overstay record exists. Travellers who fail to exit on time may face administrative penalties and difficulty obtaining future visas for Macao, Hong Kong, or mainland China. Those holding double-entry or multiple-entry visas may re-enter Macao only within the validity period stated on their visa, and each new entry resets the 14-day stay limit.

In addition, Nepali travellers connecting through Macao to other destinations should understand that transit without visa is not permitted unless they remain in the international airport’s restricted area and continue on the same day. Anyone exiting the airport for a layover must hold a valid visa. The same applies to travellers using ferry connections between Macao, Hong Kong, and mainland China — separate entry permissions are required for each region.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, Nepali visitors should plan ahead, prepare authentic financial and accommodation documents, carry printed copies of their itinerary and return tickets, and avoid overstaying or misusing their visa category.
