Nepali Passport to Macao: Visa-free or Not? What You Need to Know

Travelling to Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) is a growing interest among Nepali tourists, students, and entrepreneurs — but many travellers are still unclear about whether Macao is a visa-free destination for Nepali passport holders. According to official information from the Public Security Police Force of Macao SAR and the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in Kathmandu, Nepali citizens are not eligible for visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to Macao. This means that every Nepali traveller, regardless of the purpose of visit — whether for tourism, business, family reunion, study, or transit — must apply for a Macao visa in advance before departure from Nepal.
The visa process for Nepali citizens is managed exclusively through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) located in Kathmandu. Applicants are required to submit all relevant documents in person, including a completed Macao Visa Application Form, two recent 1.5-inch color photographs, a valid passport (original and photocopies of used pages), a round-trip air ticket booking, proof of accommodation, and financial proof showing at least MOP 15,000 (approximately NPR 250,000–275,000) in their bank account. Applications are accepted Tuesday to Thursday (9:00 AM – 3:00 PM) and typically take 15 to 30 working days for processing.
The visa fee for Nepali applicants is NPR 9,400, which includes a visa fee of NPR 3,300, a service fee of NPR 3,900, and a contact fee of NPR 2,200. Once approved, the Macao visa is generally valid for single entry (3 months), double entry (3 months), or multiple entry (6 months), with each entry allowing a maximum stay of 14 days. Extensions are rarely granted, so travellers should plan their trips carefully and adhere strictly to the permitted duration.
Since Nepali citizens do not qualify for visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival facilities are not available at Macao International Airport or any border checkpoint. Attempting to travel without a valid visa will result in immediate denial of entry and deportation at the traveller’s own expense. Similarly, those transiting through Macao to other destinations must also hold a valid visa unless they remain in the airport’s international transit zone and continue their journey within the same day.
Travellers visiting Macao for business or study must apply under the respective visa category and include supporting invitation letters, admission documents, or sponsorship certificates. Family visitors should include a relationship certificate translated into English, Chinese, or Portuguese, and authenticated by Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For a smooth visa experience, it is recommended that applicants start preparing their documents at least one month before their intended travel date. All information must be truthful, clearly printed, and consistent across documents, as errors or fake information can lead to refusal or even a permanent travel ban to Macao, Hong Kong, or Mainland China.
Therefore, Nepali passport holders planning to visit Macao must secure a pre-approved visa before departure. With the right documentation, valid financial proof, and careful planning, travelling to Macao is a straightforward process that allows visitors to enjoy the city’s blend of Chinese and Portuguese culture, vibrant nightlife, and world-class tourism.
