Provincial Wage Trends 2025: Where Are Salaries Rising Fastest in Nepal?

The Salary and Wage Index (SWI) for FY 2024/25 reveals striking differences in wage growth across Nepal’s provinces, underscoring regional disparities in labor market dynamics. Nationally, wages increased by 2.63%, but the pace varied significantly between provinces.
The fastest wage growth was recorded in Sudurpaschim Province, where wages surged 7.44%, taking its index to 108.03. This sharp rise reflects a combination of remittance-driven demand, labor shortages due to migration, and higher compensation in agriculture and construction. Close behind, Lumbini (+3.72%) and Karnali (+3.09%) also registered strong growth, showing that western Nepal is leading the wage momentum. Gandaki Province (+2.74%)followed with stable and healthy growth, supported by its tourism and service-driven economy.
In contrast, the country’s economic hub, Bagmati Province, posted only 1.98% growth, and Koshi Province trailed with just 1.23%, the slowest in Nepal. These results highlight that larger provinces with higher employment bases are showing more restrained wage adjustments, possibly due to higher living costs, cautious employer policies, and tighter budget controls. Madhesh Province (+2.14%) sat slightly below the national average, reflecting modest but steady growth.
The data signals that while smaller provinces are catching up or even outperforming in wage growth, larger regions like Bagmati and Koshi face challenges in aligning wage increases with rising costs of living. For workers, the disparities mean that income gains are not uniform, and for policymakers, the focus must be on reducing gaps by promoting balanced economic opportunities.
