Textile Imports Surge 20% in Nepal: Fashion Industry Trends 2025

Nepal’s textile imports jumped by 20% in the first month of 2025/26, reaching Rs. 2.92 billion compared to Rs. 2.43 billion in the same period last year. With a 2% share in total imports, textiles are emerging as an increasingly important commodity, reflecting both changing consumer preferences and the fast-growing fashion industry in Nepal.

Analysts say the surge is driven by multiple factors. First, the rising demand for ready-to-wear apparel, designer clothing, and branded fabrics has fueled imports from India, China, and other regional suppliers. Nepal’s domestic textile production remains limited, mostly confined to small-scale weaving and traditional fabric, which cannot meet the volume or variety demanded by urban consumers. Secondly, youth-driven fashion trends and social media influencehave accelerated demand for international styles, fast fashion, and seasonal collections.

Another factor is the expansion of e-commerce platforms and retail chains, which import bulk fabrics and garments to cater to a growing middle-class consumer base. However, experts caution that this import surge poses risks for Nepal’s trade deficit and raises questions about the competitiveness of local textile industries. Without modern technology, investment, and branding, Nepal’s domestic textile sector struggles to compete with cheap and stylish imports.

Looking forward, Nepal’s fashion industry in 2025 is expected to become more dynamic, blending imported fabrics, global fashion trends, and local cultural identity. Policymakers face the challenge of encouraging local production while balancing the rising consumer appetite for international designs.
