Thailand SMART Visa Program — Opportunities for Nepali Entrepreneurs

Thailand’s SMART Visa Program is an advanced initiative launched by the Royal Thai Government to attract highly skilled professionals, innovative entrepreneurs, investors, and executives who contribute to the country’s high-tech and future-oriented industries. The SMART Visa program is specifically designed to support Thailand’s economic transformation under the Thailand 4.0 policy, which focuses on technology, innovation, and sustainable industries. For Nepali entrepreneurs, this program provides a golden opportunity to expand their business ventures, invest in Thai startups, or establish innovation-based companies while enjoying long-term visa benefits and simplified procedures.
The SMART Visa is different from regular Thai business visas because it combines multiple privileges into one — including up to four years of visa validity, exemption from the work permit requirement, and annual reporting instead of every 90 days. The program has several categories: SMART “S” (Startup) for entrepreneurs, SMART “T” (Talent) for experts in technology and science, SMART “E” (Executive) for senior-level managers, and SMART “I” (Investor) for those investing in innovative businesses. Each category is managed under the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) and related government agencies such as the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) and National Innovation Agency (NIA).
For Nepali entrepreneurs aiming to apply under the SMART “S” category, the requirements are clear. Applicants must establish or plan to establish a startup company in Thailand in one of the targeted industries such as digital technology, automation, smart electronics, biotechnology, food innovation, or health and wellness. They must hold at least 25% of company shares or be a director in the company. Additionally, they should maintain a bank balance of at least THB 600,000 (approx. NPR 2.5 million) for three months prior to applying and have comprehensive health insurance covering their entire stay. The startup must also receive endorsement from one of the Thai government innovation agencies confirming that the business aligns with Thailand’s national development strategy.
One of the major attractions of the SMART Visa is its long-term validity of up to four years, which reduces the need for annual renewals. Holders of the SMART Visa are also exempted from obtaining a separate work permit, allowing them to operate or manage their businesses freely. Moreover, instead of reporting to immigration every 90 days like most foreigners, SMART Visa holders only need to report once a year, simplifying compliance. The visa also allows multiple entries and permits dependents (spouse and children) to live in Thailand; in some cases, the spouse is even allowed to work legally without applying for an additional work permit.
To apply, Nepali entrepreneurs must first obtain a qualification endorsement from the SMART Visa Unit (One-Stop Service Center) under BOI. This step verifies the applicant’s business plan, financial stability, and eligibility under one of the SMART Visa categories. After endorsement, the applicant can apply for the actual visa at the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu or, if already in Thailand, at the One-Stop Service Center (OSS) in Bangkok. Required documents include a passport, endorsement letter, company registration or investment proof, proof of funds, medical certificate, and health insurance policy. Once approved, the SMART Visa is issued with validity ranging from one to four years, depending on the category and business plan.
For Nepali investors, the SMART “I” category offers opportunities to invest in Thai innovation-driven enterprises with a minimum capital threshold set by the BOI. Similarly, professionals in technology or digital sectors can apply under SMART “T” if they have expertise in IT, AI, engineering, or biotech and earn at least THB 100,000 per month. Senior executives in multinational firms can apply under SMART “E”, provided they have a bachelor’s degree, significant experience, and meet salary requirements.
