Thailand Visa-Free Transit Facility Explained for Nepali Travelers

Thailand offers a Visa-Free Transit Facility (VFTF) for travelers transiting through its international airports under specific conditions. This facility allows passengers from certain countries to stay in Thailand for a short period without obtaining a visa, provided they meet strict criteria related to flight connection, duration, and documentation. For Nepali travelers, this facility is limited but can apply in special circumstances — especially when transiting to a third countrythrough Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) airports.
The Visa-Free Transit Facility is designed to help genuine transit passengers who do not need or wish to leave the airport for a long time. Nepali citizens generally do not require a transit visa if their layover time in Thailand is less than 12 hours, and they remain inside the international transit area of the airport. This means that as long as travelers do not pass through Thai immigration, they can stay in the designated transit lounge and continue their journey to their onward destination without applying for any visa. This applies mostly to travelers connecting flights on the same airline (e.g., Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, or Emirates) or under the same ticket booking system (PNR).
However, if a Nepali traveler’s transit time exceeds 12 hours, or if the connecting flight requires them to exit the transit zone, such as when traveling on separate tickets or changing airports, a Thailand Transit Visa (TS) is required. The Visa-Free Transit Facility does not cover situations where passengers must collect baggage, clear immigration, or stay overnight in Bangkok city. In such cases, travelers must apply for a Transit Visa through the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu before departure.
In 2025, Thailand’s immigration policy remains consistent: no visa is needed for transit under 12 hours, but beyond 12 hours or inter-airport transfers require a visa. Travelers must also hold a confirmed onward ticket, valid passport (minimum six months validity), and a visa for the next destination country, if required. Airlines may deny boarding if these documents are incomplete. Nepali travelers connecting to countries such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, or Australia through Bangkok should confirm their flight details and ticket type with their airlines or travel agency before departure.
