Top Digital Payment Platforms in Nepal – eSewa, Khalti, Connect IPS, and More

Over the past decade, Nepal has experienced a digital payment revolution, moving steadily toward a cashless economy driven by innovation, convenience, and regulatory support from Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). Among the many players, eSewa, Khalti, ConnectIPS, Namaste Pay, and Hamro Pay stand out as the most influential platforms shaping the way Nepalis transact, save, and manage money in the 21st century.

eSewa, established in 2009, is Nepal’s first licensed Payment Service Provider (PSP) and remains the market leader. It allows users to make mobile recharges, pay utility bills, buy tickets, settle school fees, transfer funds, and even pay government revenues. Its early start, vast agent network, and integration with major banks have made eSewa a household name in Nepal.

Khalti, launched in 2017 and recently merged with IME Pay, is known for its user-friendly interface, reward system, and diverse merchant network. It provides both personal and business payment solutions, enabling users to perform transactions, QR-based payments, and API integrations for e-commerce. The merger has strengthened its market presence and financial infrastructure.

ConnectIPS, operated by Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL), is distinct because it links bank accounts directlyrather than working as a wallet. It allows users to connect multiple bank accounts and perform real-time fund transfers, bill payments, and government service payments directly from bank accounts. It is also the foundation of NEPALPAY QR, which promotes interoperability among different banking and wallet systems.

Namaste Pay, a government-backed digital wallet introduced by Nepal Telecom and Rastriya Banijya Bank, aims to expand financial inclusion through offline (USSD) and online payment systems. It enables users to perform transactions without internet access, targeting rural and semi-urban populations.

Hamro Pay, the newest entrant integrated into the Hamro Patro ecosystem, is rapidly growing by leveraging the app’s vast user base. It focuses on accessibility, QR payments, and innovative features like audio QR, designed to make digital payments easier for all users.

Together, these platforms are building the backbone of Nepal’s digital economy, reducing dependence on cash, expanding financial access, and supporting NRB’s vision of a secure, transparent, and inclusive payment ecosystem.
