Transit through Macao: What Nepali Travellers Should Know

For Nepali travellers planning to transit through Macao, it is essential to understand that Nepali passport holders are not eligible for visa-on-arrival in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR). Even for short layovers or transits, a valid visa is required in advance, as Macao maintains a controlled entry system for nationals from Nepal and several other South Asian countries. The visa application process must be completed through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) located in Kathmandu, and travellers are advised to initiate the application well before their departure date.

The Macao Transit Visa functions similarly to a short-stay tourist visa, allowing transit passengers to pass through Macao on their way to a third destination. However, this visa does not permit staying longer than the approved transit period, which is typically up to 14 days. To apply, travellers must submit a completed Macao Visa Application Formwith two recent 1.5-inch color photographs, a valid passport (original and copies), and documents proving onward travel such as a confirmed flight ticket from Macao to the final destination. In addition, proof of accommodation (either a hotel reservation or, if staying briefly with a relative, utility bills and identification proof of the host) may be required.

A critical requirement for all Nepali transit applicants is financial proof, demonstrating sufficient funds to cover the short stay in Macao. Applicants must present a balance confirmation certificate issued by a recognized bank, showing a balance exceeding 15,000 Macanese Patacas (MOP), dated within the last 30 days. This confirms the traveller’s financial capacity to handle expenses during the transit period.

The application process is straightforward but must be completed in person. Applications are accepted Tuesday to Thursday (9:00 AM – 3:00 PM) at the CVASC in Kathmandu. Once submitted, the visa is processed within 15 to 30 working days, subject to approval by Macao immigration authorities. The total visa fee is NPR 9,400, comprising a visa fee (NPR 3,300), service fee (NPR 3,900), and contact fee (NPR 2,200).

The transit visa validity varies depending on the traveller’s requirement and visa category.

  • A single-entry visa is valid for 3 months, allowing a 14-day stay in Macao.

  • A double-entry visa is valid for 3 months, allowing 14 days per entry.

  • A multiple-entry visa is valid for 6 months, with a maximum of 14 days per entry.

Travellers should ensure that their transit duration and connecting flights align with visa validity. Those with longer layovers exceeding 24 hours or planning to leave the airport premises must hold a valid visa. Travellers merely connecting flights within the same day, remaining in the airport’s international transit area, may not require formal entry clearance—but this depends on airline and airport immigration policies, and confirmation with the carrier is strongly recommended.

As with all visa categories, it is crucial to fill out the application form truthfully and clearly. False or incomplete information may result in rejection or delays. Since visa officers assess each case individually, travellers should attach clear supporting documents and ensure that their travel itinerary and finances demonstrate genuine transit intent.

For accurate and updated information, Nepali travellers should consult the official website of the Public Security Police Force of the Macao SAR (http://www.fsm.gov.mo/psp/cht/psp_top5_3m.html) or contact the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Kathmandu directly before making travel arrangements.
