Visitor Visa vs Transit Visa for Hong Kong — Which One Do You Need?

Visitor Visa vs Transit Visa for Hong Kong — Which One Do You Need?

For Nepali citizens, understanding the difference between a Visitor Visa and a Transit Visa for Hong Kong is essential before planning a trip. Both visas are processed by the Hong Kong Immigration Department (HKSAR), but they serve very different purposes and have distinct requirements.

A Visitor Visa (Visit Visa/Entry Permit) is needed if you are traveling to Hong Kong as your main destination — whether for tourism, business meetings, family visits, or short-term stays. This visa allows you to clear immigration and stay within Hong Kong for a defined period, typically up to 14 or 30 days, depending on the approval. Applicants must submit supporting documents such as a valid passport, passport-size photograph, bank statement, flight and hotel bookings, and a cover letter explaining the purpose of the visit. Visitors are strictly prohibited from engaging in employment, business, or full-time study during their stay. For Nepali passport holders, this visa is mandatory, as Nepal is not among the 170 visa-free countries for Hong Kong.

In contrast, a Transit Visa is designed for travelers passing through Hong Kong en route to another destination. If your connecting flight is booked under the same ticket and you remain within the international transit area of Hong Kong International Airport (without passing through immigration), you do not need a visa. However, if you must collect baggage, switch terminals, or stay overnight in Hong Kong, a Transit Visa/Entry Permit is required. For Nepali citizens, Hong Kong’s transit policy states that a visa is required unless the traveler remains airside without entering Hong Kong territory. This means most Nepali travelers are safer applying for a Transit Visa to avoid travel disruption, especially when there is a long layover or separate connecting flight.

The processing time for both visas is typically 4–6 weeks, and the fee is around HKD 230 (approximately NPR 4,000)per person. The required forms are ID1003A (applicant) and ID1003B (sponsor, if applicable). The visa can be applied online, by post, or through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Once approved, applicants receive a Visa/Entry Permit Label or e-Visa, which must be affixed or printed for travel.

To avoid confusion and ensure compliance with Hong Kong immigration policies, Nepali travelers are advised to determine their travel type accurately — Visitor Visa for entry and stay, and Transit Visa for short layovers.
